Center
Upstate Carolina Medical Center is Gaffney’s hometown hospital. As the leading healthcare facility in the Cherokee County, Upstate Carolina takes pride in providing one-on-one personal care, something the employees refer to as their “Patient First” philosophy. In addition, the patients take comfort in knowing their hospital is supported by a national company, HMA, giving them access to the some of the latest technology being developed today.
Upstate Carolina came into being in 1988, when the county decided to sell the local hospital—Cherokee County Memorial Hospital—to private business. Today, it is privately owned by Health Management Associates of Naples, FL, and is one of the company’s 62 community-based hospitals across the nation. There is a wide range of hospital services, including 24-hour Emergency Department, Acute Care, Intensive Care, Surgery, Women’s Services and Emergency Medical Services (EMS), and a medical staff (privledged physicians) of about 100, covering a wide range of primary care and specialties.
The mission of Upstate Carolina is…
Every day, deliver the best Patient First healthcare in the Upstate. We achieve this through…
• Our People

In terms of business, Upstate Carolina is a major contributor to the local economy. The hospital employes more than 250 healthcare professionals. It contributes more then $12 million to the economy through its payroll. And property tax is more than $250,000 yearly.
A primary concern of the hospital is community outreach. To help citizens understand and learn more about today’s health concerns, Upstate Carolina sponsors monthly HealthTalks, free community seminars hosted by local physicians. It also provides several health fairs each year; many in the workplace, others that caters to specialized groups, such as men, women, children, or African-Americans.
By participating in nearly every aspect of community life, Upstate Carolina enjoys a good reputation, as both a business leader and healthcare provider. The hospital’s employees represent the institution on many different civic and charity boards and participate in as many community activities as possible. For example, the hospital is the largest local contributor to the S.C. Peach Festival, providing EMS standby, a first aid station and financial support.
Upstate Carolina Medical Center is committed to providing excellence in healthcare, and at the same time, promoting the business of Cherokee County. For more information about this hospital, please call its marketing department at 864 487-1515.
